How veneers can change your smile

Many people become reluctant to smile when they have a cracked, protruding, chipped, damaged, widely spaced or discoloured tooth (or teeth). This can leave patients feeling self conscious. Veneers are a very popular cosmetic solution that could be the answer to your problems…

What are veneers?

Veneers are a bespoke solution to repairing damaged teeth and are hand crafted by your dentist here at Cliftonville. They are thin layers of porcelain, specially shaped to suit your tooth and are fixed onto the front surface of the tooth with dental cement, giving an amazing cosmetically appealing finish.

What is involved in getting veneers?

Your dentist can generally complete the procedure over 2 visits – a consultation and the fitting of the veneer itself (though this can sometimes be more depending on the amount of teeth in question). During your free consultation, a treatment plan will be drawn up so that your needs can be addressed and any questions you might have can be answered.

Following this, your dentist can begin the procedure which firstly, involves taking impressions of your teeth so that your veneer is an exact fit for your teeth and looks and feels natural. In order for the veneer to fit in with your existing teeth, we will need to etch the tooth that is being treated; some of your tooth matter will be removed and shaped, so that it does not appear thicker than your other teeth. Once we have your impressions back from the laboratory, the veneers can be bonded into position, giving your a natural-looking smile.

Maintaining your new smile

Veneers can be maintained in exactly the same way as your natural teeth. This means you should be brushing twice a day for 2 minutes each time and flossing once any to remove bacteria and food particles along your gumline. A healthy mouth and teeth also requires that you have regular check-ups with the dentist and dental hygienist, both of which play a vital role in your overall health also. If you would like advice about how to look after your smile, your dentist or hygienist here at Cliftonville will be happy to speak to you about this.
