What is dental phobia and anxiety?

Here at Cliftonville, patients of all ages suffer from dental phobia and we understand a fear of the dentist can affect someone’s wellbeing. Even check-ups can be a source of anxiety.

If you feel this is familiar to you, we can help. There are people who will put off visits to the dentist because of fear and actually jeopardise their dental health in the process, which is why Cliftonville are committed to making your feel at ease about visiting us. Your dentist here will always listen to your anxieties and take them very seriously, helping you find ways to get through them.

Are there symptoms of dental phobia?

  • You have a tense night and trouble sleeping before the day of your appointment.
  • Tense waiting in the waiting room.
  • You will find any excuse to miss your appointment.
  • The thought of a visit to the dentist makes you feel sick.
  • You have trouble rationalising your fears.

If you feel your dental phobia is preventing you from attending check-ups, please come to us for help. It is vital that you look after your teeth to prevent necessary treatment in the future and tackling your fears will hopefully make your visits more pleasant. The Cliftonville team will support you in any way we can.

Cliftonville offer modern and safe intravenous (IV) sedation for nervous patients, so that you can remain conscious but relaxed throughout treatment. Often, patients do not recall having the treatment but report back that the IV sedation made them feel as if they had gone to sleep for the duration of the procedure.

So what is Intravenous Sedation?

IV is a sedative liquid that is painlessly injected into the patient’s hand. The effects will manifest themselves quickly, making your feel relaxed but still allowing you to co-operate with the dentist throughout the procedure. Dr Amita Peet (and indeed her team here at Cliftonville) is a highly experienced dentist and has carried out sedation for many patients, having performed over 3000 cases.

If you would like to make an appointment for a check-up or to discuss other types of treatment, please do not hesitate to contact us.
