Tennis players and their teeth

Even the hottest tennis players in the world have their imperfections and today we’re talking about their smiles.

Serena Williams and Invisalign

Serena Williams famously underwent treatment to straighten her teeth when she was 16, opting for the widely popular Invisalign clear aligners. As a tennis player with a rigorous diet and daily routine, the world no.1 needed a minimally-invasive appliance so as to not distract her from playing. As Invisalign aligners are removable, there is no need for patients to amend their diets and brushing and flossing can continue as normal. Patients have a 2 hour window in which to remove the braces each day to suit their schedules, so if you have a presentation at work or an important meeting, they can also be removed for this. Milos Raonic and his mouthguard

World No.3 Milos Raonic, who was a Wimbledon finalist last year, has expressed that he wears a custom made mouthguard on and off court – ‘it helps to not grind my teeth while I play – this can cause stress and headaches sometimes’.

Milos is describing a very common ailment known as bruxism (teeth grinding) which can affect people at any time of the day and some don’t even know they have it. A custom made mouthguard, also known as an occlusal splint is created from an exact model of your teeth, achieved by taking impressions or moulds. The guard keeps your teeth in better alignment and stop them from coming into contact and wearing each other down. Your jaw joints are also protected from being stressed by excessive force. Milos avows that ‘When I don’t sleep with it for a night, I can feel my jaw muscles just tense up the next day – I wear it all the time other than when I’m eating, so I got used to it pretty quickly’. As the guard is made in the exact image of your teeth, it I comfortable to wear.

If you think you might be suffering from bruxism, please get in touch with us and we can look at creating you a custom made mouthguard to keep it at bay and protect your teeth.
