What Is The Process Behind Getting Veneers?

Veneers are one of the most popular cosmetic treatments around and the first versions of veneers date back to the 1930s, when Hollywood stars needed their teeth to look their best on screen. With very little preparation involved, your dentist at Cliftonville can transform your smile using veneers before you know it, whether it be to tackle decayed, discoloured, cracked or chipped teeth.

Preparing the teeth

The preparation stage of the veneers process is straightforward and hassle-free. Effective groundwork helps to ensure a natural look and strong bond between the teeth and the porcelain.

Removing the enamel

Your dentist will remove a thin layer of enamel from the front of your teeth to be treated – the amount of enamel will depend on the patient’s specific needs and the type of veneers being placed, though this is generally around 5-7mm of enamel.

Dental impressions

Once this first step is complete, your dentist will take impressions of your teeth – here at Cliftonville we do this digital rather than the using the traditional alginate method (you can read more about the benefits of digital impressions here. These impressions can then be used as the basis for the design of your veneers.

Fabricating the veneers

Here at Cliftonville we have an on-site milling machine that can create your veneers while you wait, so there’s no need to return for a second appointment, saving you time.

What are the benefits of veneers?

  • Non-surgical procedure – you won’t need to take any time off to recover from treatment for veneers and the procedure is non-surgical, pain-free and straightforward.
  • Durable solution – if cared for properly, veneers can last for up to 15 years. They can be maintained in the same way as your existing teeth, so there is no need to worry about treating them differently or making exceptions for them in your oral hygiene routine.
  • Stain-resistant – porcelain veneers are stain-resistant and tenaciously maintain their shade, though this should not be a reason not to care for your teeth all the same!
  • Bespoke – here at Cliftonville we believe in a custom approach to dentistry and this is no different in the case of veneers. Your veneers will be made in the image of your smile and your dentist will take your tooth shade, hair colour and overall facial aesthetic into account when designing your veneer.
