Extreme fear of the dentist is a very real phenomenon for 12% of people in the UK and many people actually put their dental health at risk by avoiding regular check-ups because of it. Nobody should have to avoid the dentist because they’re scared and one modern advancement that has helped millions across the world is the marvel that is Intravenous Sedation (IV).
Intravenous Sedation (IV): the answer to dental phobia
IV sedation is administered via a tiny plastic cannula in the back of the hand and you won’t feel any discomfort when this occurs. Patients will typically feel the effects of sedation within a matter of minutes and the sensation is one of relaxation and well-being. You may also find that you cannot recall the procedure or only parts of the procedure as the drug used (Benzodiazepine) has amnesic traits. You will be able to co-operate with the dentist should they need you to answer commands such as ‘open your mouth more widely’ or ’tilt your head back.’
The modern dental practice has changed
Once upon a time, dental practices had a reputation for being unwelcoming, clinical, and even intimidating. Much of the equipment looked like devices you might find in a medieval torture chamber! Fortunately, today’s modern dentistry technology is made to look much more friendly to the human eye. Practice designs are more homely, comfortable, and specifically designed to make patients feel at ease.
