Your dental practice probably isn’t the first place you think of when you’re looking to improve the quality, health and appearance of your skin. However, an increasing number of dental practices now offer non-surgical skincare treatments and skincare product ranges, which is something we’ve been doing here at Cliftonville Dental, for many years.
Discover everything you need to know about the ZO Skin Health, which you may also know as the Obagi skincare range, developed by Dr Zein Obagi.
What is the ZO Skin Health range?
The brainchild of Dr Zein Obagi, the ZO Skin Health, or Obagi skin range, is a line of prescription-strength products that are available after a consultation with a ZO Skin Health-trained professional, such as Dr Arti Shah here at Cliftonville Dental in Northampton.
The ZO Obagi skincare range (that’s available here at our dental practice in Northampton), is designed to address the following skin concerns, making it an extremely versatile set of products:
- Signs of ageing skin, such as fine lines and wrinkles.
- Dull and fatigued-looking skin.
- Acne, acne scars and rosacea.
- Sensitive skin.
- Dehydrated skin.
- Sun-damaged skin.
The products that make up the medical-grade Obagi skincare range are made to a much higher standard than typical products that you might see in a chemist. As they contain a higher concentration of active ingredients, they are prescription-only and considered more effective than premium skincare products.
Who is Dr Zein Obagi?
For over 35 years, Dr. Zein Obagi, has pioneered advanced skincare solutions based on his philosophy of creating and maintaining healthy skin, as opposed to treating disease and damage once it has occurred. His visionary approach has earned him an international reputation as a leading authority on skin health and rejuvenation. He is highly skilled in treating skin of colour, often tackling the most difficult cases around the world.
What are the ‘Fundamental Five’ products at the heart of the Obagi skincare range?
When creating and formulating the ZO Skin Care range, Dr Obagi based the brand on the principle that there are 5 core products that should be an essential part of any skincare system. These are:
Cleanse
The first step in any skincare routine is to cleanse, which will remove lingering debris that accumulates as a result of free radicals and impurities.
Exfoliate
Exfoliating helps to remove dead skin cells that sit on top of your skin and improves your skin’s texture. Improved circulation and skin cell turnover are also benefits that can come from exfoliating regularly, as well as better absorption of other products that form part of your skincare routine.
Tone
All skin types can benefit from toning, as it helps regulate sebum production, and restores the right pH level. Surprisingly, a healthy pH level veers more on the acidic side of the scale, as with more acidity the skin is better equipped to combat microbes and free radicals that can speed up the ageing process. The skin’s pH level is affected by factors like acne, pollution, seasonal changes, certain cosmetics, sun exposure and overwashing your skin.
A toner gently refreshes your skin, without getting rid of the natural moisture it needs to look and feel great. It’ll also prepare your skin for reaping the benefits of the barrier repair you place over your skin post-toner.
Barrier repair
The barrier repair step of the Obagi skin care range is in place of a moisturiser. Dr Obagi believes that moisturisers interrupt your skin’s ability to naturally hydrate and balance oils, causing dullness, sensitivity and dryness. With the Obagi range, you’ll receive a barrier repair, to bolster your skin’s natural hydration and restore the skin’s barrier function.
SPF
We may live in the U.K where it can sometimes feel like the sun never shines, but that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t wear an SPF every single day. UV rays don’t rest and you can even develop fine lines and wrinkles from indoor sun damage, such as through windows and from smart devices and computer screens. ZO Skin Health offer a great range of SPF-based products and we’ll be able to select the correct one for your unique needs and skin type.
