Sedation Dentistry in Northampton: What It Is and How It Helps Anxious Patients

Dental anxiety is far more common than many people realise. Research suggests that around one in six UK adults experiences high levels of dental anxiety, and for a significant number of those people, this anxiety is severe enough to prevent them from seeking dental care altogether. The consequences of avoiding the dentist can be serious, leading to deteriorating oral health, pain, and ultimately more complex and costly treatment.

At Cliftonville Dental in Northampton, we treat many patients who feel anxious about dental treatment. Sedation dentistry is one of the most effective tools we have for helping people receive the care they need comfortably and without distress.

What Is Sedation Dentistry?

Sedation dentistry uses medication to help patients relax during dental procedures. It is not the same as general anaesthesia, where a patient is rendered fully unconscious. With most forms of dental sedation, patients remain conscious and able to respond to questions and instructions, but they feel significantly calmer, more relaxed, and often have little or no memory of the procedure afterwards.

Sedation can be used for routine treatments such as fillings and extractions as well as for longer or more involved procedures. It is appropriate for patients who experience significant anxiety about dental treatment, patients with a strong gag reflex, patients with physical conditions that make sitting still for extended periods difficult, and patients who need a large amount of work completed and prefer to have it done in fewer, longer appointments.

Types of Dental Sedation

Intravenous (IV) Sedation

Intravenous (IV) sedation is the most commonly used form of dental sedation for anxious adult patients. A sedative medication is administered directly into a vein, usually in the back of the hand or arm. The effects are felt very quickly, and the level of sedation can be carefully controlled and adjusted throughout the procedure. Patients who have had IV sedation frequently describe the experience as feeling like they have simply blinked and the appointment was over.

Inhalation Sedation

Inhalation sedation, also known as relative analgesia or happy air, uses a mixture of nitrous oxide and oxygen delivered through a small nosepiece. It produces a pleasant feeling of calm and reduced anxiety while maintaining full consciousness. The effects wear off within minutes of removing the nosepiece, which means patients can drive themselves home and return to normal activities almost immediately. This makes it a particularly convenient option for less complex procedures or for patients whose anxiety is moderate rather than severe.

Oral Sedation

Oral sedation involves taking a prescribed sedative tablet, usually a benzodiazepine such as diazepam, before the appointment. This produces a calming effect, though it is generally less predictable than IV sedation and offers less control over the level of sedation.

At Cliftonville Dental, we will discuss the most appropriate sedation option for your individual circumstances and the treatment you need.

What Happens Before and After Sedation?

Before receiving IV sedation, you will have a consultation to review your medical history, current medications, and suitability for sedation. You will be asked to fast, meaning no food or drink for a minimum of six hours before the appointment, and you will need to arrange for a responsible adult to drive you home and stay with you for the remainder of the day.

After IV sedation, most patients feel drowsy and slightly disorientated for the rest of the day. You should not drive, operate machinery, sign legal documents, or make important decisions on the day of your sedation appointment.

If you are anxious about dental treatment, sedation dentistry can genuinely transform your experience. Many patients who have avoided the dentist for years are able to have extensive treatments completed comfortably and return for routine care without the distress they previously experienced. For context on the kinds of treatments that can be carried out under sedation, including root canal treatment, please see our root canal guide for more information on what that procedure actually involves.

Frequently Asked Questions About Sedation Dentistry

Will I Be Asleep During the Procedure?

With IV sedation and inhalation sedation, you remain conscious throughout but feel deeply relaxed and calm. Many patients have little or no memory of the procedure. General anaesthesia, where you are fully asleep, is different and is generally only used in hospital settings.

Is Dental Sedation Safe?

When carried out by trained professionals following appropriate protocols, dental sedation is very safe. Your vital signs are monitored throughout, and sedation is only offered after a careful review of your medical history.

Can Anyone Have IV Sedation?

Most adults in reasonable health are suitable candidates. There are some medical conditions and medications that require careful consideration. Your dentist will review your health history at the pre-sedation consultation.

How Long Does IV Sedation Last?

The sedation itself typically wears off within a few hours, though some patients feel drowsy for the rest of the day. You will need someone with you at home for the remainder of the day.

How Much Does Sedation Dentistry Cost?

Sedation is an additional cost on top of the dental treatment being carried out. The exact fee depends on the length of the appointment and the type of sedation used. Our team will provide a full breakdown of costs at your consultation.
